Our lives are generally so busy and often consumed by stress and anxiety. Taking a little time to do what boosts us, can hold us in good stead.
Stress has, in many ways, become our “norm’. Some stress is profitable, helping us to move forward and get things done. It allows us to progress towards our purpose and goals. But out-of-hand stress steals from our emotional and physical health, leaving us depleted and exhausted.
In Isaiah 40:31, the promise of God’s peace is not derived from struggles in our abilities but found in His presence. As we wait in God’s presence, we will receive peace, new strength, and energy to avoid growing tired and weary.
“Take a seat and rest in God’s presence.”
Joyce Meyer
Joyce suggests “sitting down”, not just physically but also putting down our wild emotions and overzealous thoughts and “take a seat” with God.
How do we do that?
The most obvious way is to pray and read scripture—the essence of faith. But, at times, even that is a challenge when our minds are so busy and anxious that we can’t “take a seat” with God. So, I want to suggest another way of simultaneously lowering our stress and resting with God.
Each one of us knows what makes us happy. The often-mundane thing that we do that calms us and relaxes us.
For example, one of my friends rearranges her furniture and spends time planning the interior decoration of her home. Others like to get involved in a sport. Gardening, for some, is peaceful. I have a few favourites, which may seem a little strange, but I love to watch Turkish dramas and knit while reading the subtitles with the monotonous task of knitting beanies or scarves. Nothing too tricky and no pattern following.
Whatever makes you happy. Take an hour and do it. Don't try to solve any problems or ponder anything important, just focus on the task at hand. Rest in God’s presence, doing something you love for a little while.
Then check your stress level afterwards. You should find, there's more calm.
